Saturdays find Journey bustling with children and their parents who gather to take dance,
drama and music classes. From the toddlers in Creative Movement (beginning at ages 2.5)
to the high-energy teens in Teen Hip Hop to the exuberant adults in Family African, there’s
a dance class for everyone and every level. Additional classes held throughout the week
include a spicy Exotic Burlesque class in the theatrical tradition and a smooth Chicago
Steppin’ partner dance workshop offered by one of Journey’s artSpace participants, 1 Step
Above. Classes focus on dance technique as well as healthy behaviors and fitness.
Through our nonprofit status, Journey is able to offer affordable tuition as well as
scholarships to needy families.
Journey also offers children’s drama classes, as well as private music lessons in guitar,
piano, percussion instruments and voice. At the end of the winter semester, students hold
a showcase where they demonstrate the techniques they’ve learned in class. At the end of
the spring semester, Journey presents our annual Spring concert, a full-scale production
with scripting, music and performances that serves as the culmination to the semester of
instruction. During the summer months and at intervals during the year, Journey offers
mini-8 week workshops and boot camps for children and adults.
Outreach:
Journey Outreach strives to bring our performances, workshops and classes
to schools and community organizations. Our outreach focuses on neighborhoods that
would not normally be exposed to extracurricular arts programming. Journey currently
offers programming in public, charter schools, preschools and daycares throughout the
metro Atlanta area.
Artist Inreach:
Our inreach programs focus on artist education. Journey EDU is our artist education
series, which is comprised of a series of workshops designed to assist creative individuals
with developing their business acumen and forming nonprofit organizations. Journey’s
artSpace program offers business mentoring and development resources along with
discounted rental space for artists to hold classes, workshops and rehearsals.
Journey After School and Summer Camp:
The mission of Journey After School is to be an extension of students’ normal school day
by providing academic enrichment, homework help and performing arts education. Journey
provides transportation from neighborhood schools to our studio location to allow parents
peace of mind until they are able to pick up their students.
Journey Dance Company:
Journey Dance is a fusion of classical ballet technique with modern, jazz, and street hip
hop flava. The Journey Dance Company began in January 2007 with the purpose to
expose youths and adults s to dance. The JDC has performed throughout the Metro
Atlanta community including the Sweet Auburn Festival, the Independent Black Film
Festival, Oglethorpe University, Morris Brown College and Georgia State University.
Company rehearsal consists of extensive technique, stretch and conditioning,
choreography and performance training. Journey Dance Company is featured in Journey
Performing Arts Center's Annual Winter and Spring production. Company Members are
given other performance and teaching opportunities throughout the dance season.
